Here’s a fun little project on how you can melt down crayon pieces to create your own shaped homemade crayons. This is perfect if you’re looking to make a cute and personal gift which uses minimal equipment. You can use any silicone mould form; I used a Lego minifigures mould to create some fun crayons for my daughter to use, now she’s getting into her crafts.
Getting Started
Heres what you will need for this super fun and simple project:
- A pack of Crayons
- Baking Tray
- Access to an Oven
- Silicone Mould (Oven Proof)
TIP: Use a silicone mould dedicated to making crayons as they can sometimes be hard to clean and you may lose the shine
Homemade Lego Minifigure Crayons Instructions
1
If you don’t have any crayons to recycle I recommend getting hold of some small crayons. Smaller ones are much easier to break.
Remove any paper from around the crayons and break into small pieces. Ideally the pieces should be small enough to fit into your mould.
I found that a whole crayon broken up would fill a lego man mould cavity. Fill each of your mould cavities with the pieces.
TIP: If you find not all the pieces of crayon fit into your mould, you can add them in once the initial pieces have started to melt in the oven. Be careful as the tray, mould and melted wax will be very hot.
2
Preheat your oven to Gas 4, 180C, 356F. Put your mould onto a tray then pop it into the oven.
Allow the wax to melt for around 10-15 minutes or until fully melted. Keep an eye out as the wax will melt quickly.
3
Remove the tray from the oven and then allow to cool.
Once the wax has fully set again, pop your homemade crayons out of the mould. You may find some of the wax will have a slight white layer on the top but that’s okay.

Now your homemade crayons are ready for creating master pieces with. Thank you for following along.
If you’re feeling even more creative, try these seed bombs for the garden. Another great project for the children to get involved in too.
